It appears that Sam Mac is about to ruffle some feathers in the hospitality industry.

The Sunrise weatherman turned investigative journalist this week, uncovering what he has dubbed a 'sparkling water scam'.

Sam, 42, took to Instagram on Tuesday to share a clip that showed him dining alone at a restaurant.

His only companion in the clip was a one-litre bottle of San Pellegrino sparkling water.

The clip showed Sam looking crestfallen as he attempted to polish off the bottle solo.

Captioning the video, Sam claimed that the large bottle of water was forced upon him, despite smaller bottles being available.

'Waiter asked if I wanted still or sparkling. I said sparkling and suddenly I was the next victim of the #sparklingscam,' Sam wrote.

As the video showed Sam laboriously attempting to finish the bottle, he admitted that he was doing so as a matter of principle.  

'Not today, bro,' he added.

'I will drink that one-litre bottle of sparkling water whether my bladder likes it or not. It's the principle. Fight the power. They are fully aware it's available in 250ml bottles.

The camera then panned to Sam's receipt which showed a $12 price tag for the Italian water before he repeated his hashtag #sparklingscam.'

'This might be a little niche… but is anyone else onto the #SparklingScam?' Sam captioned the clip. 

Sam's intrepid reporting certainly struck a chord, animal porn with many followers commenting that they, too, had fallen victim to the 'scam'.

'Every time,' one fan wrote. 

'It happened to me in France too, and I took the bottle with me and the waiter chased me down the street and demanded it back.'

Another offered: 'And then when they have it on tap, put it in a bottle and still charge you $12.' 

A third added that they were behind Sam's call with: 'Omg this is my pet peeve!!!

'Especially restaurants that keep filling up your glass to run the bottle asap, then replace it without asking you!!! Such a rort.' 

It didn't end there either, with one thirsty fan adding: 'Very cheeky on their behalf. It's the same as "do you want a bag" OR "do you want sauce" as if it's complimentary but nope, 50c later... lol.' 

Sam's water exposé comes after he divided fans after retuning to Sunrise in June with a new look.

The popular presenter, who shares Margot, two, and Mabel, ten months, with fiancée Rebecca James, debuted a beard which he had grown in his month away from the show. 

Prior to his first day back, Sam uploaded a picture to social media, telling fans that if the snap of his new facial hair got enough likes, he would keep it.

'If this photo gets 10 thousand likes I'll keep the beard for my return to @sunriseon7 on Monday #DadLeaveBeard,' he captioned the post, which showed him holding onto his new bundle of joy.

However, it seemed many fans were not too pleased with the dad-of-two's new look.

'Very good to see Sam Mac back and showing why he is the best at weather. The beard was an interesting addition,' one person wrote on a Sunrise chat forum.

Another chimed in: 'It's horrid. Most guys with beards at least, tidy up their throat area.'

One person savagely commented on his Instagram post: 'Sorry Sam, but I dislike the beard immensely. What does Bec think of it?'
