Nick Cave, Emeli Sande and Arctic Monkeys go head-to-head as 2014 Ivor Novello nominees are revealed

Nick Cave, Emeli Sande and the Arctic Monkeys are among three of the nominees who will fight it out at this year's Ivor Novello Awards.

The music heavyweights are joined by a wave of new talent, including the acclaimed London Grammar.

The eponymous Ivor's, named after the Welsh-born composing genius, are prized among musicians because they are voted for by fellow songwriters and experts.

It is the first Best Album nomination for industry legends Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, who will go head-to-head with the Arctic Monkeys and Laura Mvula for the title.

Emeli Sande, who last year took home two of the six awards, has received another nod, this year for her song Clown in the category of Most Performed Work. She is up against Flo Rida and Troublemaker by Olly Murs.

New talent, however, fills the other categories. Acclaimed trio London Grammar have made it into the revered category of Best Song Musically and Lyrically.

They will face John Newman and indie rock band Palma Violets for the award. Other accoldaes to be bestowed at the ceremony include Best Original Film Score - which will go to either Gravity, Captain Phillips or the restored 1924 documentary The Epic Of Everest.

Best Television Soundtrack nominees include Mr Selfridge and Ripper Street.

There are six main categories, as well as a number of special awards including The Ivors Jazz Award, The Ivors Inspiration Award and Songwriter(s) of the Year.

Lifetime Achievement, Outstanding Song Collection, PRS for Music Outstanding Contribution to British Music and International Achievement will also presented.

London Grammar's Hannah Reid said: 'It's the most prestigious award so it is amazing. It's the most song writing focused award and that's fundamentally what artists do.

'When I first wrote the melody I loved it, but I fell out of love with it half way through. People kept trying to change it. But we pushed through that so now I feel a really strong connection with it.'

Despite the songwriting nomination, she admitted most people get the lyrics wrong.

'It's really strange. People sing "I might seem so strong" when it's actually "man seem so strong". They sang it wrong on The Voice, and Chase and Status got it wrong on LiveLounge.'

It is exactly a year since the trio made their first live debut. In that time they have soared to success, supporting Coldplay and appearing on US shows such as David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon.

Dan Rothman: 'It's been amazing. It's been a crazy year. It has literally been a year since we played our first live show.

Coldplay were amazing. We were lucky enough to hang out with Chris and Will. They were just amazing to us. For a band like them to give us their thoughts was amazing. And to be really nice to us was pretty cool.'

DJ Paul Gambaccini will host the ceremony - more than six months after his arrest as part of Operation Yewtree.

The broadcaster was detained by the Metropolitan Police in October as part of the force's investigation into historic sexual offences.

Gambaccini, who denied the allegations after his arrest and remains on police bail, stepped down from his weekly BBC Radio 2 show after the arrest.

The Ivor Novello Awards will take place on Thursday 22nd May at the Grosvenor House, London.
